In the second stage of the season, the participants of the trail run series “Stirnu buks 2024” will explore the “Suiti land”!

Living apart as a small Catholic island in the Lutheran Kurzeme environment, the Suits have maintained what has not survived in any other part of Latvia in comparable density and concentration - the specific character, habits, national costumes, and traditional culture items. The “Burdons” or singing of the Suits women is Latvia's most famous Suits tradition. In 2009, the cultural space of Suits was included in the list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage.

We advise you to come to this stage and take your family along and stay for several days to explore Alsunga, the ethnic culture center “Suits” with creative workshops, exposition, the storage of the Suits heritage, to taste the pride of the area “sklandarausis” (a specific bun), to move a little by participating in the trail run, and to stop at the Abava waterfall on the way back when you can observe a unique natural phenomenon there at the end of April, namely, as vimba head to their spawn areas up the river, they are overcoming the waterfall by jumping over it. During Duke Jakob, unique fish-catching baskets were installed in the Venta waterfall, and fish jumped into them. Since then, Kuldīga has been known as a town where fish are being caught.

During the second stage of the trail run, "Suitu zemes Stirnu buks," participants will leap into the heart of Kurzeme. The forest intertwines with meadows, hiding a place with ancient history and unique traditions—Alšvanga.

We'll leap into the 17th century, when the identity of this place was developed - from the forest to the lost narrow-gauge railway tracks, from Ēdole Castle to Alsunga Castle and onto the Alsunga Catholic Church, where a unique heritage that has been carried through centuries was born and preserved. We'll go through it to the present day to continue the story of what is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List and cherished even today - the distinctive character, customs, food, colorful national costumes, traditional cultural items, and objects.

Sklandrauši (traditional Latvian carrot and potato pies) will be at the finish line!
